If so, congratulations! You are off to a great start. This is a very good place to begin.
In recent years, this concept of clean and sober housing (also known in some regions as halfway houses) has taken hold as a vital tool in helping men and women build a solid foundation in their new way of life and to create a network of lasting friendships that encourage this spiritual walk.
With the wealth of inpatient and outpatient treatment centers in the Yakima Valley, as well as the countless array of 12-step meetings available on any given day, we in the Yakima Valley recovery community are uniquely fortunate to have these resources at our fingertips. As a direct result of this fact, this housing model has exploded over the past decade, and it continues to expand.
Over the past few years, treatment providers have begun to recognize that clean and sober housing is a legitimate, and in fact, an important tool in helping to solidify a person's likelihood of long-term recovery.
With over two dozen such houses in the City of Yakima alone, some run by treatment agencies and others independently-operated, the Clean and Sober Housing Alliance was formed to ensure that as housing providers, we are acting in the best interests of our tenants and that we all operate on a relatively level playing field, ensuring the safety and well-being of all tenants.
Membership in the Clean and Sober Housing Alliance creates accountability on the part of landlords. Landlords who cannot or will not comply with the bylaws of the Alliance are removed from the membership rolls. All agencies have slightly different house rules and protocols. But we feel that our bylaws ensure a reasonable measure of protection for the safety and well-being of tenants.
The membership rolls of the Alliance are exactly the same as the housing list offered on this site. Landlords have a strong incentive to be a part of the Alliance because they know that the vast majority of potential tenants get the names and phone numbers of clean and sober house landlords from the Alliance Membership List (usually posted at a treatment center or a 12-step meeting). The Alliance is the only measure of assurance we are aware of that actively tracks the living conditions of clean and sober housing in Eastern Washington.
Be aware that not all clean and sober houses in and around Yakima are members of the Housing Alliance. If you plan to move into a clean and sober house, look to ensure that the landlord is listed as a member of the Clean and Sober Housing Alliance...before you move in! It's like the Good Housekeeping Seal for halfway houses!
